What is artificial sweetener or sugar substitute?

Types of sweeteners available in India

In India there are four major types of artificial sweeteners available. These are Sachharine, Aspartama, Sucralose and Stevia.

Saccharine

Saccharine is one of the most popular sweeteners and sugar substitutes available in India. It is sold under the brand names Sweet n Low or Sugar Free. It is an organic molecule derived from petroleum and is almost 300 times sweeter than natural sugar. Saccharine is not affected by heat and so has the biggest advantages as it can be used easily in sugar free cakes and other sweetmeats. It contains no calories at all and is very effective in managing blood sugar levels. Saccharine was reported to be a potential ‘carcinogen’. Lots of studies conducted on male lab rats confirmed that saccharine does increase chances of bladder cancer.

Aspartame

Aspartame is sold under the brand name Equal and Sugar Free Gold. It is one of the pocket friendly sweeteners and sugar substitutes available in India for the user. It is a combination of amino acids – aspartic acid and phenylalanine with menthol. Aspartame is near about 180 times sweeter than sugar. 1 gram of aspartame is equal to 4 calories. It is good for cardio vascular issues. It requires in very nominal amount for tea or coffee.

Stevia

Stevia is in fact a herb and is a organic sweetener so it cannot be termed as an ‘artificial’ sweetener. The brand names which sell stevia are BeStevia, Sunova and Steviocal. Stevia is a safe sweetener. It is 250 to 300 times sweeter than sugar. It is one of the calorie free sweeteners and sugar substitutes available in India.

Sucralose

According to many doctors and scientists believe that Sucralose is the best sweetener in the market. Sucralose is available as Splenda and Sugar Free Natura in India and it is near about 600 times sweeter than ordinary sugar. This is produced from sugar cane extracts. It is another calorie free sweetener and sugar substitute available in India.

Equal
